In our podcast Filles de comm, we like to shed light on the sometimes little-known, yet essential realities of the communications and media industry. For this new episode, we have chosen to focus on a key profession in the Quebec media landscape: that of a freelance journalist. To listen to the episode, it’s right here: tharacommunications.com/podcast

Self-employed worker, collaborator with several media outlets, content creator wearing multiple hats… freelancing still raises many questions. How does this mode of work operate? How do article ideas come to life? How to balance freedom, creativity, journalistic rigor, and financial security? That’s exactly what we wanted to explore in this episode.
To fuel the discussion, we were delighted to welcome Maude Carrier and Véronik L’Archevêque-Roy, two freelance journalists with whom we love to collaborate.
Maude Carrier is a freelance journalist and producer of video, web, and podcast content. Behind the blog MC Globetrotteuse, she has made travel journalism her specialty. She writes columns for NoovoMoi, Le Journal de Montréal, and Magazine Véro, transforming each field experience into a vivid, human, and inspiring narrative. Her daily life is marked by discovery, travel, and a deep passion for recounting the world differently.
Véronik L’Archevêque-Roy, for her part, leads a double professional life. A graduate in industrial design, she works full-time in her field while being a freelance journalist since 2015. Curious, versatile, and driven by a keen eye on trends, she collaborates with media such as Véro, ELLE, NoovoMoi, and Narcity, where she explores the art of living in all its forms.
With this episode, our goal was clear: to better understand the reality of freelance journalists, both for communications professionals and for anyone curious about becoming a freelancer. With Maude Carrier and Véronik L’Archevêque-Roy, we discuss how article ideas are developed and pitched to the media, strategies to stand out in pitches, and how to manage workload. We also talk about collaborations with press relations specialists, press trips, ethical rules, and freelance confirmations, not shying away from issues of precariousness, rates, and work-life balance. An essential exchange to better understand independent journalism, in a context of profound transformation in the media.
It’s a meeting on the 10th of each month for a new episode of Filles de Comm, the Thara Communications Podcast powered by Grenier.
